There are different approaches and opinions about what short stories actually are. In general, short stories, as the name implies, are short stories. Compared to, for example, a novel that also tells a story, short stories usually have a length between 500 and 2000 words.
However, this is not a rigid rule, so that a writer can also write shorter or significantly longer short stories. A typical feature of short stories is that they can be read in one go.
In principle, short stories consist of an introduction, a main part and a trailer:
The introduction is usually only very brief, sometimes even completely omitted and the short stories then begin in the middle of a scene. There are also short stories in which at the beginning there is a kind of theorem that forms the basis for the stories. Due to the relatively short scope is in short stories on extravagant descriptions omitted as a rule.
This means that short stories play in one or very few places and develop in a linear fashion, ie without much time jumps. In addition, short stories usually contain only one or very few characters, which in turn are described succinctly and in a nutshell. In many cases, only one characteristic of the figures is highlighted, which shapes these figures.
However, this property is not simply named, but the figure is described in such a way that this typical property shows in their behavior. This indirect, subliminal form of presentation is a typical feature of short stories anyway. This means that in short stories much is not expressed directly, but the reader is encouraged to make his own thoughts. Short stories mostly deal with the human psyche, embedded in typical everyday situations.
Short stories are divided into two groups:
Here are short stories divided into two large groups. On the one hand, there are short stories that tell a commonplace event without any unexpected twists or dramatic events.
On the other hand, there are short stories that take a seemingly unpredictable turn. After reading the short story and a brief reflection, however, it often becomes clear that this unexpected turn was not so sudden, but actually already indicated.
Tips and instructions for writing short stories
It is quite possible to learn to write short stories, and there are some tips that make writing easier. The Short Story Guide begins with clarifying the basic questions and defining what the short story is about.
The best way to do this is to create a list of the most important points.
Among the questions that are clarified is, for example, which key message the short story should have, how the key message can be presented most effectively, what the peak of tension should be and what mood prevails in the short story and what impression it should leave.
In addition, the characters and their characteristics, the location and the time are determined. All these considerations form the basic framework and on this basis the author can then write his short stories.
The next point in the guide is to revise the first version:
The point is to give the story depth and the finishing touch, for example, by further hints, metaphors or by recesses.
This is especially important in the context of the characters, because the reader must get to know the characters in order to understand their behavior. For example, in the short story, if a vase goes to break and the main character breaks down crying, the reader will not be able to understand that reaction if he does not know the background.
On the other hand, if the author mentions that the vase was a special memento, the reader will be able to understand the behavior. However, if the vase plays no role in the actual plot, the author should refrain from telling about it, as this distracts attention only from the actual story.
